All of our rats are housed in large cages, giving each rat approximately 2 square feet. We currently use a mixture of cages, including a Ferplast Mito, a Tommy T3 and a Terenziani Rodin. None of the rats live alone, unless it is absolutely necessary due to aggression problems. Other cages with use include a variety of Rabbit cages and Critter cages (these cages are similar to the Terenziani cages, and are not to be confused with the Crittertrail hamster cages.)

Nursing and Pregnant does will stay in a Duna tank, until the babies are 1 1/2 - 2 weeks old. They will then move into a Savic Ruffy cage with their litters, this provides space for mum to get away from the babies if she needs a break, and enables to babies to get used to climbing. As the babies develop a larger cage is used. Usually around 3 1/2 - 4 weeks they will move into a Critter 2 cage or similar.

All of our rats are bedded on Ecopetbed, a cardboard bedding. I have found this to be the most suitable of choices. They are also provided with shredded newspaper and/or SafeBed Paper Wool to make nests with.

Our rats are fed on a modified version of the Shunamite Diet, and are given fresh foods daily, usually a variety of vegetables. In the winter they are also often given Brown Wholegrain bread. Healthy treats are provided, in the form of fruit, cooked pasta and dog biscuits. They are also occasionally given chicken bones and fish.
